Overwatch 2: What’s New?

I presume you’ve heard the news. If not…Surprise!

Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 during the opening ceremony of Blizzcon 2019. At long last many of us thought. Finally, we are getting a more refined shooter to waste our hours away playing.

So many hopefuls held their breath and are still holding. What’s new? What did they improve? Is Mei coming back? No seriously, is she? Because if she isn’t, then we riot.

Well, fear not, all 31 heroes belonging to the first games cast indeed are making their return. Complete with updated looks as well! Not only that, Blizzard is introducing us to some new heroes as well, with the first of these, Sojourn, already being revealed to us.

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief; our favorites are saved.

What else, though? The last thing we want is just an updated $70 dollar rehash of a title we have already played.

Well, for starters, and perhaps the most significant piece of news is the fact that we are getting a story mode.

Yes, you read that right. Finally, what may end up being five years after the launch of the first game, we are getting a fully-fledged story mode.

Of course, this won’t stop us buying the comics and all the other bits of media, obviously, but it’s more delicious lore to add to the pile.

Fans have, been asking for a story mode for quite some time. Blizzard's writing team hit a home run with their work on Overwatch.

They crafted a meticulously detailed world, with gorgeous stylization and a universe that was begging to be explored.

Their characters are arguably the best ever written for a competitive Esports title. Each is so distinctly unique, with quirks and personality, not just a bland shell for the player to inhabit.

They are also the first team in the modern Esports era to not overly sexualize their female roster. Something that I am eternally grateful for. It means that their characters have depth, and they focused on developing what truly mattered, and it clearly didn’t affect their ability to capture the hearts of the player base. Did I mention I love Mei?

Of course, we’re not just getting one new hero to play with. All 31 members of the original cast are joining a whole host of new characters for us to explore to our heart’s content.

So what’s new with the multiplayer? We don’t have much information yet, but what we do know is that the story content is going to be multiplayer! So players who don’t like PVP are bound to be delighted.

According to Game Director Jeff Kaplan, players can fight alongside each other, instead of against each other, in a series of cooperative single-player missions.

So there you have it, that’s the bulk of the new stuff. If you haven’t already you need to go check out the cinematic announcement trailer, and if you can watch the entire announcement for full coverage on everything that Blizzard has to offer.
